God’s Tears

-         R. V. Pandit
-         Translated into English by Dr. S. M. Tadkodkar
-
In wonder great
God gazed , one day
At the world by Him create

All things that went their way
O’er the world’s face,
His Glance did clearly trace;
And man, too, holding sway
O’er them all.

Thus God’s Left Eye
Beheld man’s cruel, dark
Misdeeds of tyranny...
Behind these, half concealed,
God’s Right Eye faint beheld
One small brave spark
Of man’s nobility.
And as the Lord did look,
Into each eye
A tear drop welled.

The left eye’s tear
With scalding smart
Told of God’s heart
By anguish rent;
The right eye’s tear,
Cool as a brook,
Mirrored His deep content.

Since this began
Thousands of years have fled
And still God’s looks are bent,
Eyes brimming o’er,
On the world He gave to man;
Wondering, will mankind ever
Make Him content and glad
For the world He made?

One tear – the Sun,
Another tear – the Moon,
Two eyes for ever turning
To His world
In hope and yearning…

My Ungelded Bull

-         Pundalik Narayan Nayak
-         Translated into English by Dr. S. M. Tadkodkar

An ungelded Bull , just now,
Has dissevered  his thether,
In an abundant cow-pen
After breaking rack of fodder

The Bull  crossed over the trough
Went away, bushes and thickets treading upon
Decorated forehead with vermilion
Smeared blood on horns

The Bull was seminally mad
The Bull roared with eructation
The Bull  even changed his stable

The Bull threw away its yoke
And broke spindle of the plough
The Bull adorned with figured work
And  sunk hard was that though

The Bull does not yield to reins
The Bull cannot be soundly drubbed
The Bull not affordable for sale
Let the Bull adorn with figured work
Let it strut as he desires

The Bull wilt not arrive on the first day of next year
Wilt not await in expectation
Wilt cometh as and when desires
Wilt show horns and get adored
My Bull, the saviour of fifty two generations
My Bull, the heir of my race…

कृतक जगात;

खऱ्याखुऱ्या जगात;

Fish-tank
-         Su. Ma. Tadkod
Translated into English by Dr. S. M. Tadkodkar
This blaze and sparkling water
These creepers and goldfish
All of them thrive on borrowed oxygen
In an artificial world;

This lamp and sparkling world
These lasses and golden temptations
And the switch of my life somewhere
In the real world;

I have been searching the fish-tank maker
Surrounding me since times immemorial !
Around me this charming glass house !!

She Listens to the Flute

-         Su. Ma. Tadkod
Translated into English by Dr. S. M. Tadkodkar

After the odour of her body Spread  hither-thither
And Moon ripened
Her mind too is feeling its shower …

Do not, please, touch her now on
She is listening to the flute
He has sent her a message known…

The woods are tingling
Do not, please, sing anything
He is on the way… deepening…

This Island…
(J ũ v o – A Konkani Poem)
Poet :    Su. Ma. Tadkod
This island…
Cast around my body and soul
As if mother has done so,
Since the times I was born;

Birth has place, if it has some piece of land
Birth begets peace, if its land offers identity
Birth without some piece of land gets no challenge
This island taught me since the times immemorial;

Recently a number of bridges are being constructed hither-thither,
They want to come into my island
(I do not know them!)
I do not want them…

Some modernity will improve the island, they say,
Some bridges are constructed by their governments
(I do not know them!)
They are known as causeways!
They are causing me worries…

Some conjoiners are being constructed by my governments
(I do not know them too!)
Some of my neighbours on the island have conjoined their hands
They are eying my island
Against my existence…

They want to drag my soul out against my will
And send to the Silicon Valley
(I do not know why!)
I saw hither-thither
My people are alone, neither mine nor their own;
My island laments for my impotency…

In Your Dreams
(Tujya SapanãtA Konkani Poem)
Poet :   Su. Ma. Tadkod

Drenched in your dreams I was
In the ocean of dreams
In whose dreams will the drenched ocean be

Singing were the dreams
Songs of life - yours and mine
In whose dreams will the songs of dreams be

Vast territory of your touch
Unspoken is in my feelings
In whose heart songs of the feelings be
